OLH students in grades 3 through 8 got a hands-on approach to this summer's emergence of Brood XIII Cicadas when the Lake County Forest Preserve's CicadaMobile paid a visit to the school recently. The CicadaMobile is a roving museum that contains interactive exhibits and informational panels. It helps inform students about periodical cicadas and the emergence that is scheduled to occur this spring/summer. Students worked in small groups and studied the geographical occurrence of Cicadas. They also learned about the life cycle of the Cicadas and about their predators. They got a chance to mimic the sound of the Cicadas - the world's loudest insect call - and to dress up as one of these fascinating insects. Donning the insect wings and sunglasses proved very popular indeed! The days activities were coordinated by Melissa Senf of the Lake County Forest Preserve.
