Spelling Bee

Our Lady of Humility students participate in a school wide spelling competition to determine who will represent our school at the regional spelling bee sponsored by the Chicago Tribune. Beginning in fourth grade, the top four students in each grade qualify for the school bee by placing in the classroom competitions. During Catholic Schools Week in January, the winners from each grade meet to determine the overall school champion. In 2010, the competition went for a record 18 rounds before a champion was determined!

Winner of 2012 Spelling Bee 8th grader Cory Pollard. Runner up 4th grader Alexandra Carrera.

National Geographic Geography Bee

Each year, Our Lady of Humility School joins thousands of schools in the United States to participate in the National Geographic Geography Bee. Using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society, students are encouraged to prepare at home and then take a preliminary classroom test. The top four students from each class participate in the school contest which takes place in January. The contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography.
